MySQL JDBC for macOS

This tutorial shows how to set up a data source and connect to a MySQL® database using the Database Explorer app or the command line. This tutorial uses the MySQL Connector/J 5.1.46 driver to connect to a MySQL Version 5.5.16 database.

Step 1. Verify the driver installation.

If the JDBC driver for MySQL is not installed on your computer, find the link on the Driver Installation page to install the driver. Follow the instructions to download and install this driver on your computer.

Step 2. Set up the data source.

You can set up a data source using the JDBC Data Source Configuration dialog box, which you can open from the Database Explorer app or at the command line.

  1. Open the Database Explorer app by clicking the Apps tab on the MATLAB® Toolstrip. Then, on the right of the Apps section, click the Show more arrow to open the apps gallery. Under Database Connectivity and Reporting, click Database Explorer. Alternatively, enter databaseExplorer at the command line.

  2. In the Data Source section, select Configure Data Source > Configure JDBC data source.

    Or, enter configureJDBCDataSource at the command line.

    The JDBC Data Source Configuration dialog box opens.

  3. In the Name box, enter a name for your data source. (This example uses a data source named MySQL.) You use this name to establish a connection to your database.

  4. From the Vendor list, select MYSQL.


    To use special parameters, select OTHER instead and enter a URL string in the resulting URL box. Then, enter the full path to the JDBC driver file in the Driver Location box and the name of the driver in the resulting Driver box. Save the JDBC data source. For details about these steps, see Other ODBC-Compliant or JDBC-Compliant Databases.

  5. In the Driver Location box, enter the full path to the JDBC driver file.

  6. In the Database box, enter the name of your database. In the Server box, enter the name of your database server. Consult your database administrator for the name of your database server. In the Port Number box, enter the port number.

  7. Click . The Test Connection dialog box opens. Enter the user name and password for your database, or leave these boxes blank if your database does not require them. Click .

    If your connection succeeds, the Database Explorer dialog box displays a message indicating the connection is successful. Otherwise, it displays an error message.

  8. Click . The JDBC Data Source Configuration dialog box displays a message indicating the data source is saved successfully. Close this dialog box.

After you complete the data source setup, connect to the MySQL database using the Database Explorer app or JDBC driver and command line.

Step 3. Connect using the Database Explorer app or the command line.

Connect to MySQL Using Database Explorer App

  1. On the Database Explorer tab, in the Data Source section, click .

  2. In the Connect to a Data Source dialog box, select the data source you defined from the Data Source list. Enter a user name and password, or leave these boxes blank if your database does not require them. Click .

    The Catalog and Schema dialog box opens.

  3. In the Catalog list, select the catalog. Click .

    The Database Explorer app connects to the database and displays database tables in the Data Browser pane. A data source tab appears to the right of the pane. The title of the data source tab is the data source name that you defined during the setup. The data source tab contains empty SQL Query and Data Preview panes.

  4. Select tables in the Data Browser pane to query the database.

  5. Close the data source tab to close the SQL query and the database connection.


    To close the database connection, close all tabs that have titles beginning with the name of the corresponding data source. For example, if the data source name is MySQL, and two tabs named MySQL and MySQL1 are open, then close both tabs.

    To close all database connections, close the Database Explorer app.

Connect to MySQL Using JDBC Driver and Command Line

  1. Connect to a MySQL database using the configured JDBC data source, user name username, and password pwd.

  2. Close the database connection.

Tested and verified for MS Windows XP/7/8/10, Linux and Mac OS X.
DBeaver requires Java 1.8 or higher. Windows and MacOS installers include JRE 1.8.

If you are on Mac OS X and you do NOT use PKG installer then you will need to setup JDK 1.8+.
Note: 3rd-party JDBC drivers may have their own system requirements.

32-bit support:

32-bit versions were obsolete in version 6.0.1 and later (because both Java and Eclipse platform are no longer support 32 bit).
If you need 32-bit version of DBeaver then you can download version 6.0.0 or earlier or use DBeaver Enterprise.


Windows installer – run installer executable. It will automatically upgrade version (if needed). Installer doesn’t change any system settings or Java installation. Included JRE will be accessible only for DBeaver.
MacOS PKG – just run it and follow installer pages. JRE 1.8 is included (and will be accessible only for DBeaver).
MacOS DMG – just run it and drag-n-drop DBeaver into Applications. Make sure you have Java 1.8 installed. On reinstall do the same (your settings won’t be lost).
Debian package – run sudo dpkg -i dbeaver-<version>.deb. Then execute “dbeaver &”.
RPM package – run sudo rpm -ivh dbeaver-<version>.rpm. Then execute “dbeaver &”. Note: to upgrade use “-Uvh” parameter.
ZIP archive – extract archive and run “dbeaver” executable. Do not extract archive over previous version (remove previous version before install). Java 1.8+ must be installed separately.

Upgrade – don’t be afraid to remove previous DBeaver version – your settings won’t be lost. All settings are kept in separate folder (.dbeaver4 in user home)

Java notes: if you use Windows or MacOS installer then you don’t need to install Java. Otherwise you will need to setup Java separately. Java 1.8+ must be the default Java version. To validate this run “java -version” in terminal window.

Debian repository:

Ubuntu PPA:
You can use PPA repository to easily install/upgrade DBeaver on Debian Linuxes. Mostly it is the same as regular Debian repo but it is hosted on Launchpad.

Early Access:

You may get latest build (EA version) of DBeaver. Usually it contains all major bug fixes found in current stable version. Just choose the archive corresponding to your OS and hardware from the following folder: EA version downloads.

DBeaver CE is free software. You can use it for any purpose with no limitations. This software is provided “as is” without express or implied warranty.

Windows and MacOS installers contain bundled Java Runtime (JRE). It is recommended to use JRE shipped with DBeaver. It won’t break any existing JRE installation, nothing will be copied in the system folders, registry or environment variables. This JRE will be accessible only for DBeaver.


DEB/RPM installers will setup all required components (including JRE) prior to DBeaver installation.

All other versions are just minimal archives that don’t contain the JRE or an installer. Just unzip and start dbeaver executable (if you upgrade from a previous DBeaver version then delete it before upgrade).
